Latvian Song and Dance Festival Grand Rapids Concert reviews
Trombone Shorty @The Pavilion Music Factory 9/16
The pre-concert music and the warm-up band were a total disaster and mis-match. The pre-concert music playing over the PA was very annoying - yuck, 60s/70s queer rock! Definitely not even close to the same genre of Latvian Song and Dance Festival's music. The warm-up band "The Record Company" was a very mediocre Blues/rock trio. Very bad choice, and again, not even close to the same genre of Latvian Song and Dance Festival's music. They didn't warm us up, they annoyed us! Their musicianship wasn't much above an amateur garage band.
Now the positive: TROMBONE SHORTY!!!!! He and his band are an awesome blend of jazz/R&B/Funk/rock who blew the roof off the place with their music!!! He is a top-notch horn player, as are all his band members. They more than made up for the prior mentioned negatives!
